Not trying to step on anyone's toes here but the 1203-USB is actually a USB 2.0 adapter. It replaced the 1203-232 which was the 9 pin rs-232 to Allen-Bradley scanbus adapter.
The 1203-usb has the older round din plug that fit the 1305 - 1395 drives and the powerflex 40 - 400 and 70 -700 drives. It also has a 8 pin rj45 cable that adapts to the newer powerflex 720 -755 drives. Both the serial and the USB adapters are powered on the drive side not by the pc. I believe it's a serial to modbus 485 (possibly with AB protocol on top) adapter. The powerflex 4 - 400 drives are modbus unless you add a comm card. Some of the other drives include modbus also.

I've seen a few slc500 plc's taken down by somebody plugging the 8 pin cable in the processor DH-485 port. Also not good for your ethernet or the 1203 if you plug it into a switch. Rockwell didn't really think that one through by using that connector.
