Firmware upgrade problems

Post by santiagoplc » Wed Sep 03, 2014 3:46 pm

Hi to everyone, this is my first topic in this forum...
I'm new in AB controllers and i've found myself with my first problem:
I have a 1756-L71/B brand new CPU and I need to upgrade the firmware to V20.012.79, but when I use the ControlFLASH v12.00.00 software, and I follow every step, I get the next message:

"Failed to begin Update to the target device"
"The target device is not in the proper mode to accept an update"

The CPU is in prog mode, the SD card is unlocked, can anyone help me?

Thank you very much and greetings to all from argentina.

Did you use RS232 cable?
For upgrade the firmware you must use RS232.

Make sure to point at the first instance of the controller in the USB or AB_VBP driver when selecting processor in RSWho window in ControlFlash.

@Serge_n: in controllogix you can use rs-232, usb or even ethernet (if you have an ethernet module in the rack) for firmware upgrade. I always use ethernet because is the faster way (I never had the chance to use usb, and rs-232 is too slow!).

Verify that the controller is not in the RUN mode.
Make sure to point at the first instance of a controller in the USB or AB_VBP driver when selecting processor in RSWho window in ControlFlash.
Do not drill past the first appearance of a controller to the backplane and then to the controller in the backplane.

I'm using USB cable, but I figured out what I was doing wrong, I wasn't pointing at the first instance of the controller.
But thanks anyway for the tip.

That's exactly what I was doing wrong, I wasn't pointing correctly... and FYI, I've used USB cable and it's REALLY fast, about 15 sec to complete the upgrade.
I don't know the communication speed of the CPU ports but on my pc I have USB 3.0, 5Gbits/sec, and the 10/100 fast ethernet port on my laptop has a max speed of 100mbits/sec, it's a big difference.
I always prefer for fast communications but short distance the USB 3.0 port (5Gbits/sec, max 3 meters lenght), and when I need to reach long distances I prefer 10/100 Fast Ethernet (100mbits/sec, max 100 meters lenght)

Thank you very much for your answer.
Greetings from Argentina.
